Story
After Spyro returns from the Fairy Realms, he discovers that Ripto, in an act of revenge, has stolen all the Fireflies which enable Dragons to breath fire and dumped them all over the land. He has also used a spell to turn Gems into Rhynocs and scatter them all over the land. Spyro must recover all the fireflies and all the gems and restore peace to the dragon realms once again.
Gameplay
The gameplay style follows the same flow as Spyro: Season of Ice. However, instead of unfreezing the fairies, you must freeze the fireflies in order to capture them. They can be found anywhere on the level, or handed out when Spyro successfully completes a task. As always, Gems are also on the checklist to be found. Making their first return since Spyro: Year of the Dragon are Sheila and Agent 9, who are also playable characters. However, their levels are different to Spyros, and only one Firefly on their level is found at a time. Sheila's levels involve stomping a certain set of items, and Agent 9 requires some tactical dodging and shooting. At the end of each Homeworld is a Boss, and, once defeated, you are allowed to continue to the next Homeworld. Moneybags is also present, asking you for more Gems to open certain Realms. Hunter and Bianca will usually give you a Firefly for talking to them in the Homeworlds as well as giving you advice. Spyro has three types of main breaths in this game - Fire, Ice and Electric.

Trivia
- It seems that Fireflies must be clumped together for their powers to work (because the dragonflies were already all over the dragon realms), this may explain why they run away.
