Story

Year of the Dragon

Spike was formerly an ordinary magenta Rhynoc who was tasked with taunting Bentley. He jumped at the Sorceress's offer of having a dragon for lunch, and willingly allowed her to transform him into a demonic satyr-like creature with horns growing out of his head and shoulders. However, despite his powerful attacks, Spike was no match for Spyro and Sgt. Byrd, and vanished in a puff of smoke, his ultimate fate unknown.

The Battle

Spike's Arena is a somewhat unstable battleground floating in a pit of green acid. Surrounding the arena are bizarrely-shaped green, blue, and purple ridges, which are lit up by the green glow of the acid. The night sky is visible overhead.

Spike wields a blue electro-cannon in his left hand, which he uses to fire varying amounts of electrical plasma orbs. If Spyro draws too close to him, Spike will slam his right fist down on top of him. He is impervious to both charging and regular flame attacks, and instead takes damage from the various projectiles supplied by both Sgt. Byrd and the arena itself.

In the beginning of the battle, large chunks of hardened red magma will be ejected into the arena from the acid, which Spyro can charge to send flying at Spike. However, Spike will consciously make an effort to smash these chunks before they can be used to damage him, and will also be firing one to two shots at Spyro. After getting hit three times, he will stomp on the ground, simultaneously destroying any spare magma rocks and cracking the arena floor, which allows jets of damaging superheated steam to vent out randomly.

In the second phase of the battle, Spike will increase his attack, firing two to three shots in succession. Sgt. Byrd will begin to drop red crystals from above which, when picked up by Spyro, will grant him a one-off wave of fire that can damage Spike. Spike himself will also aim to pick these crystals up, which will allow him to fire off a superpowered shockwave from his cannon. After three more hits, he will stomp on the arena with enough force to crack the floor further, allowing more steam to escape.

The final phase of the battle sees Spike firing three to four shots of plasma orbs and Sgt. Byrd dropping blue crystals from above. Spyro can pick up the blue crystals and fire them as homing projectiles, while Spike can pick them up and use them to fire a steady stream of blue and green energy at Spyro. If the ray of energy does not hit its target, it will eventually dissipate, and cause Spike to bang the side of his cannon in an attempt to get it working again.

After Spike is defeated, he will spin around, fall flat on his back, and disappear in a puff of smoke. A Dragon Egg containing Monique will be released, and Spyro will resume his journey towards Evening Lake.
