Throughout the Spyro Series, Spyro is accompanied by a Dragonfly named Sparx. While Spyro and Sparx occasionally converse with each other through his buzzing tone, Sparx's focus in the Spyro series is more oriented towards gameplay than narrative: Sparx is the player's health meter personified. Whenever the player takes a hit, Sparx's body color changes, from gold, to blue, to green, and ultimately disappearing entirely, leaving Spyro vulnerable to defeat upon the next hit. The player can restore Sparx's (and, hence, Spyro's) health by defeating small creatures called fodder throughout each level. Doing so releases a butterfly, which Sparx devours, recovering one hit point in the process.
Aside from his function as a health meter, Sparx also assists by collecting nearby gems and treasure for the player.

Early History
Two thieves were running off past the Dragon Kingdom with two eggs. At this time, the Dragon Realms were at peace. One was a red dragon egg while the other was a yellow dragonfly egg. The dragons caught the thieves red handed with the 2 eggs, the thieves dropped the eggs. The dragons took the eggs as their own and cared for them until they hatched. The Dragonfly egg hatched first, his name was Sparx. Sparx used to crawl around the dragon's egg when he was a larvae. One Day The red dragon egg became hot, as if breathing fire from the inside. The Dragon hatches from the red egg, his name was Spyro. By this time, Sparx was a fully fledged dragonfly. Spyro rescued Sparx from a bird and they became the best of friends.
Spyro The Dragon
In Spyro the Dragon, Sparx accompanied Spyro on his quest to defeat Gnasty Gnorc. Sparx helped Spyro collect the treasure and take hits for Spyro.
Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage
In Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage, Sparx yet again accompanied Spyro on his newly found quest to destroy Ripto. Sparx once again helped Spyro to collect all the treasure (and easily with his newfound "point-to-gems" ability) and take hits for Spyro.
Spyro: Year Of The Dragon
In Spyro: Year of the Dragon, Sparx once again collected treasure and took hits for Spyro. He also helped Spyro find 4 eggs in his playable stages:
- Level I: Crawdad Farm
- Level II: Spider Town
- Level III: Starfish Reef
- Level IV: Bugbot Factory
In these Gauntlet, Birds-eye like stages, Spyro must travel through the realm, collecting keys to open gates, destroy enemies which try to attack Sparx, collecting gems and destroy the boss at the end of the level to receive an egg. Sparx can eat Butterflies to gain special powers and revitalize his health. Once Sparx completed these levels, he received a power, these powers were:
- Collecting Treasure Further away
- point-to-gems
- Extra hit point
- Warp to levels
- open chests
Sparx also hosted the Speedway levels, asking Spyro what he wanted to do in those levels.
Spyro: Enter The Dragonfly
Sparx continues to collect gems and take hits for Spyro in Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly. He also once again hosts the Speedway levels. It seems that Sparx has lost all his powers gained in Spyro: Year of the Dragon.
Spyro: A Hero's Tail
Sparx can talk in Spyro: A Hero's Tail and is the only one who can use items such as "lock picks". Sparx Continues to take hits for Spyro in Spyro: A Hero's Tail, though he seems a lot wimpier because he does not block acid lakes for Spyro and he "runs away" when he feels like it. It also seems that Sparx does not collect gems anymore or at least he does an equal amount of Spyro.
He once again appears as a playable character, going into cracks in the walls and finding eggs at the end of a tunnel infested by things that want to kill him. These stages are in third person back mode and appear as minigames inside realms.
