In Spyro the Dragon
Gnasty is described in the manual as a sloppy, ugly, unpleasant creature "from the bottom of his dirty boots to the top of his unwashed head", and is stated to have both a gnome's short temper and an orc's bad attitude. He resents the Dragon race, but hates their Gems even more, since his less-than-appealing appearance is always reflected in their shiny surfaces whenever he looks at them.
His hatred of the inhabitants and their Gems grew problematic to the point where he had to be banished to the Dragon junkyard so that the Dragons would not have to deal with him. Gnasty was perfectly fine with these arrangements, and quickly renamed the place Gnasty's World. While there, he began to study magic spells, and he eventually stumbled upon a spell to trap all of the Dragons in crystal, as well as a potion that would animate their Gems, turning them into Gnorcs.
When the game begins, Gnasty is listening in on a news interview about him that is taking place in the Artisans homeworld. When Lindar insults his intelligence, strength, and appearance during the interview, Gnasty responds by angrily using his learned spell to transform every grown dragon into crystal statues, only missing Spyro due to the little dragon playing hooky at the time. He proceeds to start turning the Dragon Worlds into the Gnorc Worlds by turning some of their Gems into Gnorc soldiers and hiring a multitude of bosses to watch over each homeworld. He also hires some Thieves to steal the remaining twelve Dragon Eggs, and hides or scatters the rest of the Gems.
Gnasty spends the entire game in a self-named realm, waiting for Spyro on top of a platform locked by a key. He does not speak to Spyro during their battle, instead trying to zap him with green beams from his club. When Spyro unlocks the platform, Gnasty quickly turns tail and runs away from Spyro until he hits a dead end, where he continuously attempts to zap Spyro until he is hit. Gnasty apparently disintegrates after taking the final hit, leaving behind five individual Gems with a combined worth of 125 Gems.
In the post-battle interview, Spyro admits that Gnasty was a worthy opponent, though for unknown reasons, all of the Dragons are frozen in crystal once again during this interview. Whether Gnasty is behind this is never made clear, but it is certain that he survived this battle and initially made it a point to not mess with Spyro ever again.

- Ugly?!? That does it!
Between Games
Gnasty Gnorc is seen in the Epilogue of Spyro: Year of the Dragon, where he has met with Ripto in an attempt to discuss "The Spyro Problem". This would initially serve as the inspiration for the plot of Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly, where he and Ripto would work together to scatter the Dragonflies throughout the Dragon Realms. Like many other aspects of that game, however, Gnasty's appearance was scrapped due to rushed production, and instead he only makes a cameo appearance as statues in Jurassic Jungle.
In Spyro: A Hero's Tail
In A Hero's Tail, Gnasty Gnorc creates more Gnorc armies to help Red, using them as Red's foot soldiers and Dark Gem miners.
An earthquake begins when Spyro enters Gnasty's Cave, forcing him into an enclosed arena with Gnasty Gnorc once more. Gnasty initially behaves in a jovial manner towards Spyro, with their pre-battle conversation carrying a tone more commonly found between old friends. As the battle continues, Gnasty grows increasingly frustrated, throwing temper tantrums with each successive hit. After being defeated, he faints on the ground, releasing the imprisoned Amp from his staff.
