Gems are one of the signature collectibles in the Spyro series, they can be found almost anywhere, either lying around or in baskets. In Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly, Sparx explains that when the thieves come and steal the treasure, they always carry to much and drop the gems all over the place. Spyro must then collect the treasure and return it to the rightful owner. Gems are one of the only attributes that have carried over to The Legend of Spyro series.
Spyro The Dragon
There are 14000 gems in Spyro the Dragon, they can be used to open new worlds and 12000 are needed to open Gnasty's Loot. However the remaining 2000 gems are hidden in this bonus world. They are found both on the ground and by defeating enemies.
Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage
In Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage, Gems need to be collected so you can pay Moneybags to progress through levels, you will also need all 10000 of them to unlock the mystery door in Dragon Shores and get the permanent Superflame powerup. They cannot be attained by defeating enemies. .
Spyro 3: Year Of The Dragon
Gems will be needed to pay the returned Moneybags so you can progress through levels. He will also need to be paid cold, hard gems to free Rebels. You will need all 15000 gems existing in Spyro: Year of the Dragon to unlock Super Bonus World. Once in there, you can collect 5000 more and make your total 20000.
