Association with Mythology and Folklore
Dragons are popular, mythological creatures used in many myths and folklore, usually from Asia or Europe. Although not existing in reality, they vary in many different shapes and sizes. They are also commonly referred to as "Red Monsters" because of their common red color and fire-breathing characteristic.
Original Spyro series
The Dragons created the Order of Dragon Elders and ruled over the Dragon Realms. Dragons originally breathed ice, but this breath wasn't very useful. It was eventually found that when many fireflies are clumped together, their collective magic enables nearby dragons to breathe fire.
Young dragons rely on Dragonflies for protection (e.g. Spyro relies on Sparx).
Dragons once lived in the Forgotten Realms, but the Sorceress banished them to the other side of the planet after having an argument with a Dragon Elder, not knowing that the dragons were the source of all the magic in her world.
Legends
It was revealed in one of the books from Spyro: Shadow Legacy, that in legend, an ancient dragon race fled the Forgotten Realms and have braved a perilous journey across the oceans, ultimately finding a new land in what they call the Dragon Realms. The Dragons rebuilt their civilization using magic and advanced stonemasonry to build the Dragon Village. Afterwards, the most oldest of dragons secluded themselves in the nearby hills and formed the Council of Elders, and has governed dragonkind for thousands of years. Though this legend conflicts with another story in Shadow Legacy, with the Great Sea Dragon discovering the Dragon Realms.
History
Spyro the Dragon
In Spyro the Dragon, all of the dragons except for Spyro are imprisoned in crystal after Gnasty Gnorc cast a spell on them for insulting him. Spyro is required to make his way through the Dragon Realms and release his fellow dragons from their crystal imprisonment. There are five different species (or "families") of Dragons, which all reside in their appropriate homeworld.
Artisans
The Artisans family provides the Dragon Worlds with artifacts of culture and beauty. They write songs, create sculptures and paintings, and are known as the most gentle of all the Dragon families. They are very social beings and enjoy getting together for group singing and art viewings among the lush, rolling hills and green valleys of their home.
Spyro is the most well-known Artisan Dragon.
Peace Keepers
The Peace Keepers are the physically strongest of all the Dragon families. They are large and powerful, and they know the most about battling their enemies. They live in the desert sand dunes, tar pits, and ice caves, and are always on the lookout for any creatures breaking the peace.
Magic Crafters
The Magic Crafters spend their time making magical artifacts used by all the Dragons throughout the rest of the worlds. They are very thin dragons who are shy around other creatures and like to be left alone. They can be very happy in their remote mountaintops, ice cliffs and caves, studying their craft in peace.
Beast Makers
The Beast Makers are responsible for bringing forth all new species of creatures living in the world. They choose to live in swamps, in tumble-down wood platforms, on stilts in the mud flats, and in hollowed-out trees in the thick forests. Here they can find natural clay, roots, and other materials to do their work. They tend to be big, bulky dragons.
Dream Weavers
The Dream Weavers are the peacekeepers of the night. From their island in the clouds, they flit through the dreams of other creatures of the world, making sure that no nightmares bother dragons while they're sleeping. Anyone who has bad dreams at night can call on these Dragons for help.

Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!
In Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!, Spyro is taken to the world of Avalar, where dragons do not exist. They are known to have large claws and teeth, and possess the ability to spit fire, though Spyro ended up being a little smaller than what the residents expected.
Spyro: Year of the Dragon
In Spyro: Year of the Dragon, it is revealed that the dragons used to reside in the Forgotten Worlds one thousand years ago, though a spat with the local Sorceress resulted in their banishment to the other side of the world. In the present, a batch of dragon eggs are kidnapped by this same Sorceress, who aims to kill the hatchlings and use their wings in an immortality spell. The Dragon Elders are too large to fit down the holes to the Forgotten Worlds, and thus it is up to Spyro to rescue them.
The Legend of Spyro series
Before Malefor's existence, the Dragons had an alliance with the Moles, and the Moles made a city in dedication of their friendship. The Dragons were revered among the inhabitants of the Realm, before Malefor caused the Dragon race to be feared.
The Guardian Dragons created the Dragon Temple to raise and train young dragons.
However, the Dragons were at war with the Dark Master, Malefor, and it is likely that they used their dragon warriors to fight against his Ape army while the Guardians protected the dragon eggs that were the dragons' very survival. During the war, many of the Guardian Dragons were lost, leaving only four Guardians to remain.
Abilities
Dragons have different breaths that are based on the color of their scales: Red for Fire, Yellow for Electricity, Blue for Ice, or Green for Earth.
- The Purple Dragon, including Spyro, is a rare species of dragon that can master any element other dragons can't, and even controls time.
- Cynder, having been corrupted by the Dark Master, is a black dragon that controls abilities that are most uncommon: Shadow, Wind, Poison, and Fear.
Skylanders
In the spin-off game of Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure, Spyro and Cynder are among many dragon characters in the game.
Abilities
The Dragons in Skylanders are slightly similar to Spyro in appearance, but have different techniques. Their attacks are based on their element, similar to how the the elements of the dragons in the Legend of Spyro series are based on the color of their scales.
- Zap is a water dragon who wields the element of Water. Despite being a water-elemental character, he has the ability to attack his enemies using electrical discharges due to him being raised by a family of electric-eels.
- Bash is a rock dragon who wields the element of Earth.
- Drobot is a robotic dragon who wields the element of Tech.
- Whirlwind is a blue dragon who wields the element of Air.
